Faye Latham's 'British Mountaineers' is published!
We are so pleased and proud that Little Peak has been able to help the brilliant Faye Latham make her book, British Mountaineers .
When Faye contacted me early last year to tell me she was interested in making a submission to Little Peak, I was excited. I had seen some of her poetry and artwork, liked it very much and was looking forward to reading whatever she sent through.
A month or so later Faye’s submission arrived. An outline describing a collection of erasure poems with some examples. They caught me immediately – here were words and symbols found in the work of others that told another newer, fresher story. It was striking that Faye made her erasure poetry from old climbing and mountaineering books: guidebooks and narratives from decades ago; inspiring and informative in their way but certainly of their time, speaking with a familiar voice.
Roll forward a year or so and here we are, the publication day for British Mountaineers . Faye has taken Smythe’s original British Mountaineers and created something breathtakingly new. Her artwork finds another voice and tells their story in beautiful, bold ways. Not disrespectful but assertive – showing us what was missing, helping us to question the past and imagine the future.
Along with over 60 beautiful erasure poems, the collection includes narrative from Faye that discusses her motivation and inspiration, and a thoughtful foreword by Anna Fleming that sets the scene for the dreamy and dramatic journey into Faye’s discovered mountain world.
All pre-orders are posted – thank you so much for your support. These include a free limited edition signed print. We still have some of these prints left – all direct orders of British Mountaineers will include a print until we run out so get in quick if you’d like one!
Faye will be talking about British Mountaineers with Anna Fleming at the Kendal Mountain Literature Festival on the 19th November. For more details and tickets please go here.
